Day 5: Implicit Bias—Something We Have in Common
Do you have implicit bias? Spoiler: We all do!
Implicit bias is a natural, unconscious part of being human. But understanding it can help us create a more fair and inclusive world.
What Is Implicit Bias?
Implicit biases are the unconscious attitudes or stereotypes we hold about people or groups. They can influence how we think, feel, and act—often without us even realizing it.
For example:
Assuming someone is good at math because they’re Asian.
Feeling surprised when a woman excels in a leadership role.
Subconsciously avoiding someone based on their race, gender, or age.
These biases come from the society we live in—media, culture, and personal experiences. They’re not always aligned with our conscious values, which is why they’re so sneaky.
Why Does It Matter? Implicit bias can affect:
Hiring and promotions: Qualified candidates might be overlooked due to unconscious assumptions.
Healthcare: Patients from certain groups may receive less attention or care.
Education: Teachers might have different expectations for students based on stereotypes.
